High-quality stops for attractive public transport
Province of Utrecht
stops USP-line
The USP line is an express tram line that connects Utrecht Central Station with Utrecht Science Park (USP). The Province of Utrecht has the ambition to offer ‘high-quality public transport’ on this line, where passengers can get on and off quickly. The aim is to create a comfortable travel experience that matches the appearance of the university and knowledge complex through which the express tram passes.
In 2024, eight stops along this USP line will receive a major upgrade. For this purpose, we have, on behalf of the Province of Utrecht, prepared a new design in which the requirements and wishes of the province, travellers and stakeholders, such as Utrecht University, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences and UMC Utrecht, have been taken into account to the greatest possible extent.

Bundled knowledge for tomorrow's world
ovPlus, a collaboration between npk design, MVAVD design and VA communication by design, has bundled its knowledge and experience in the fields of public transport and public space. Based on the quality of our proposal, we won the tender for the design of the new USP stops.
We have drawn up guidelines in terms of coherence and use of space, identifiability, comfort, quality, demonstrable sustainability and location-specific execution. With the new design, we are defining a standard for all the tram stops in Utrecht, Nieuwegein and IJsselstein.

Thorough preparation for a smooth implementation
The scale of the new design was tested using a 1:1 model at a pilot site of the Province of Utrecht. Builder and producer Epsilon Cities also built a complete stop in their workshop. Nothing was left to chance to make the complex realization run smoothly.
Integrated solution with functional modules
The complete redesign of the stops consists of various functional modules which can be installed at the stops depending on the local situation. The design can be adapted based on needs and local conditions.
