GUI for a flexible and customizable platform

Kleinknecht and Lismar

HMI for steel industry roll-grinding machines

Heavy-industry workplaces require intuitive and efficient user interfaces to enhance control and visibility for critical functions. To address these needs, we designed a new GUI for roll grinding machines, catering to the requirements of Kleinknecht and Lismar’s industrial clients.

Kleinknecht and Lismar are part of Ascential Technologies, formerly known as the Burke Porter Group. Together, they provide innovative solutions for the transportation, medical and life sciences, and industrial markets.
Kleinknecht specializes in machine controls for roll grinding machines, and Lismar excels in measurement technology for grinding machines. While they often collaborate, both companies maintained their individual human machine interfaces.

Tailored focus for various users

At the industrial workplaces there are diverse needs of various user groups who interact with large grinding machines. These machines handle heavy rolls and high-speed grinding discs, creating a challenging environment.

Our primary goal is to ensure a user-friendly experience. We’ve achieved this by creating a customizable and modular platform that offers a clear visual hierarchy, making essential information the focal point. This design caters to different user groups, ensuring they have access to the information they need.

Our approach

We analyzed the current GUI with insights from Kleinknecht, Lismar experts, and steel industry visits. Our process involved wireframes, prototypes, and multiple concepts. We finalized the project by implementing selected ideas across different surfaces, building blocks, and configurations.
We maintained continuous communication with Kleinknecht and Lismar clients, creating a flexible, user-centered HMI with a modern look as the foundation for future innovations.

A contemporary, modular interface

We collaborated closely with Kleinknecht and Lismar to completely redesign the existing GUI. Our goal was to develop a versatile and modular toolkit, ensuring flexibility for integrating various functionalities across different grinding machines concepts from different original supplieres.
The modular grid we’ve designed ensures a future-proof platform that allows for the agile integration of tomorrow’s cutting-edge technology, benefiting Kleinknecht and Lismar.
